The Chans

A special first dance, KFC and retro Ilford film photos.

We first met Tim and Susannah at [redacted] for their engagement shoot. There was gorgeous colour and light, rock reflections and then some camera flash fun. Then the night almost ended with us all getting locked into the [redacted], until Susie found a removable pole and we all got out in time for some much needed dinner. Sorry security people… we didn’t mean to!

Tim shoots film and has a great eye, so I definitely felt the need to create something great for them! I brought along my sprocket rocket and shot a roll of black & white film - Ilford HP5 is one of Tim’s favourite black and white films. You’ll see some of those shots below. (Also check out @chanwithcamera on insta!)

Tim and Susie’s first act as a married couple was to pray together. This was such a sacred moment and such an honour to witness. The thing about Tim and Susie is that they always exude kindness and encouragement - it’s never about them, it’s always about the others around them.

Their early morning wedding meant a lunchtime reception, with what may be some of the best thought-out wedding food we’ve ever had. Tim and Susie proved on their wedding day that you can in fact have both KFC and fancy-pants cake at your wedding and make it work. In fact, I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen guests so excited to dig in!

The reception continued with heartfelt words and some well-planned speeches, the shoe game and an impromptu worship song. You even saw it here first - personalised Pokemon cards showing each stage of the groom’s evolution. Winner!

After the reception, we drove in a convoy with Tim and Susie and their retro car to an amazing lookout nearby. They had saved their first dance for just the two of them, away from everyone else. The sun dipped below the horizon and we got sprinkled with a little rain, just us and them and the beautiful words of ‘Known’ playing through the bluetooth speaker. It was such an incredible privilege to witness such an intimate moment like this. Such magic!

Tim and Susie prayed for us in our marriage before we left, humbled and thankful for this day. If we weren’t already teary from earlier in the day, we definitely were now. After a car-roof debacle involving the bride, groom, Mel, the videographer and I all asking “how do we even attach this to the car?!” as the weather started to come in. Tim and Susie were packed away into their car, assuring us they’d call if the roof flew off and they need rescuing, and they set off for their honeymoon.

Final mention for this day does however to Mel; as this particular wedding was actually on her birthday. Thanks for being a good sport darling and for all of your great images as always!
